Kolln!

Well, I had never heard of the ten sentence patterns, so seeing those was kind of confusing, and it may take some getting used to--although they make sense. I also didn't think of grammar in ways other than rules for writing and speaking; the four definitions we discussed in class were suprisingly refreshing.

As far as questions go, I remember diagramming sentences in grade school or middle school (I don't specifically remember which), but after that there was little attention paid to it at all. I definitely remember diagramming nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases, so what are other people's experiences with diagramming? Had a lot of you done it before?

We diagrammed sentences for one week in 10th grade. It was grammar week, and I believe we were lucky to get even that much. That was in Oregon. In Iowa, in grade school we had Daily Oral Language (DOL), which was dreadful, and and in 9th grade we did some diagramming of sentences but more often than not we dealt more with "parts of speech" and simply identifying parts or labelling them.

I remember labeling parts of speech in elementary school but once a concept had been taught and we had "learned it," we never returned to it for a review or a reminder of it. I also remember learning to edit papers and note capital letters, commas, or other punctuation but again, we never really reviewed those tools. We were often expected to remember everything and teachers became frustrated if we did not remember all we had learned that year and in previous years.

I have never seen the diagramming sentences too. They quite confused me how it organized. However, after I understand how it made, it was really fun to make. The grammar may be something different to that I have thought before.

Before this class, I had not seen or heard about diagramming. It was very interesting to me to see that sentences could be broken into those ten patterns. I’m curious if there are exceptions that do not fit into them. In elementary school, we learned about commas and capitalization. In high school we covered nouns, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, and adverbs, but not much else. I think many teachers expected us to already know grammar. It surprises me that you had some experience with diagramming in grade school.

I have never diagrammed sentences before. It is completely foreign to me. Interestingly, a friend of mine who attended a private school is an expert at diagramming sentences. From what I gather, public schools avoid teaching it, but private institutions embrace it.

I have not seen a sentence diagram before this course.

The sentence patterns were new for me too, and I have had a lot of difficulty keeping them straight, because my high school never really taught specific grammar rules. The only things we ever learned about grammar were the mistakes that were corrected in our papers.

The most that I had done in school was with identifying nouns, verbs, prepositions, et cetera, as well as conjugations. That I understood. How to use it in writing I had a hard time grasping, and in fact still have problems with it.
